Capturing high quality sound images is a lot like capturing high quality photo images… an artful blend of technology and technique.
We work with some of the most skilled sound recordists in the world – including highly accomplished field engineers trained by National Public Radio. We record in digital stereo and surround sound. Our professional recording equipment and high quality microphone arrays insure clean, consistent recordings. We have extensive experience in different climates and conditions and a good understanding of how equipment functions in hot or cold, and dust or damp – from the North Pole to the Sahara Desert. Additionally, we understand the importance of working cooperatively with field scientists, researchers, photographers, guides and interpreters. Past assignments have involved some of the world’s leading explorers and field scientists at remote and diverse habitats.
Getting the sound right in the field is the foundation of everything we do, but much of our creative technique is actually applied in the studio. With digital editing processes, we can expand and direct sound images to highlight different aspects of field recordings. We can craft sound productions to different lengths and a variety of uses – online, or in presentations or installations for museums or other public spaces, or to accompany film, video or still photography. For natural sound and authentic recreation of field experience, our studio production experience is unmatched. From an encounter with a full-throated humpback whale beneath the sea, to the angry attack of a swarm of a hundred-thousand killer bees, to a nighttime encampment at an elephant gathering ground in the Congo, we can reproduce a recording experience in brilliantly clear detail – whether you’re listening through headphones on an MP3 player or in a wide, symphonic concert hall.
